A journey implies a destination or some sort of arrival — but no epic “thing” is coming in life, Watts said.”He explains that traditional systems of education have skewed the meaning of life (towards arriving at a destination) by placing too much importance on progressing through school and college to a career,” Branson wrote. “And makes his point by saying that far too many people live to retire and therefore cheat themselves of an exciting existence.”That’s why Branson doesn’t think retirement should be the goal. “Instead, I think happiness should be,” he wrote.”I’ve never thought [of] work as work and play as play; to me, it’s all living and learning. Elizabeth Ames The Tech Industry’s Real Problem With Diversity Is Clear. It’s Not The Pipeline. For women in Silicon Valley, 2017 has been a watershed year. We’ve seen women technologists share their stories of sexual harassment and bias, shocking industry outsiders and even many male colleagues. Susan Fowler’s blog post blew the lid off of Uber’s sexual harassment issues and hostile culture. Soon thereafter, a crew of female entrepreneurs turned a spotlight on blatant sexual harassment in the venture capital world. Neither of these stories surprised women or minorities who work in tech, but—finally—people were listening.Related Video: See Inclusion as a Growth StrategyThe antidiversity screed penned by ex-Google engineer James Damore isn’t so surprising, either. As women and members of minority groups speak out and make gains, it’s inevitable that we’ll see pushback from those who benefit from the existing system. Damore’s screed is proof of that. Who wants to work with someone who clearly believes that gender makes them less qualified? Who wants to have that same person weighing in on their performance review? And who wants to be prejudged based on their gender before they’ve even walked in the door? I think we can all agree that every worker deserves to work in a harassment-free environment where they are evaluated based on their skills, abilities and accomplishments.Women leave technology careers at a rate twice as high as their male counterparts due to exactly this sort of bias, harassment and cultural hostility. Scandals like the Google memo make it doubly hard for girls and women to feel welcome as they pursue jobs at tech companies.Related: 3 Reasons Why Gender Equality is an ‘Everyone’ IssueWomen at Google are in a bind: Speaking out puts them at risk of being targeted. But now is exactly the right time for women and other marginalized technologists to tell their stories and make clear the daily human toll of bias and harassment. They need to share their dreams because, counter to prejudicial notions, women actually are ambitious, smart and, yes, even aggressive. external affairsHindimeaofficial language First Published: July 4, 2019, 8:49 PM IST New Delhi: The Union government has made “sustained efforts” to publicise Hindi and spent Rs 43.48 crore over the past five years to propagate the language worldwide through diplomatic missions and posts, the External Affairs Ministry said Thursday.Responding to a question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs V Muraleedharan said the government has made sustained efforts for acceptance of Hindi as an official language of the United Nations and its propagation across the world. According to UN’s procedure, getting Hindi accepted as an official language involves adoption of a resolution by the General Assembly with at least two-thirds of its membership. Besides, the additional expenditure will have to be borne by all UN member-states.Muraleedharan said the government has allocated and spent Rs 43.48 crore over five years to publicise Hindi worldwide through diplomatic missions and posts abroad.”The details of the funds spent over the last five years are: Rs 2.88 crore (2014-15); Rs 10.88 crore (2015-16); Rs 5.01 crore (2016-17); Rs 3.54 crore (2017-18) and Rs 21.17 crore (2018-19),” he said.He said India signed an MoU with the UN Secretariat in March 2018 for an initial period of two years to increase the volume and frequency of Hindi content produced by the UN.”In July 2018, UN launched Hindi versions of its social media content on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Hindi website of UN News was initiated on the occasion of World Hindi Day in January 2019. The UN News audio bulletins in Hindi (UN Radio) are being released on a weekly basis,” he said.Listing out the steps, the minister said Indian leaders have delivered statements at the UN in Hindi, including the prime minister’s statement at the 69th UN General Assembly in September 2014 and at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015 and a World Hindi Secretariat has been set up in Mauritius since February 2008 to promote Hindi as an international language.He said efforts to propagate Hindi worldwide are also being made by our diplomatic missions abroad in coordination with the Indian Council of Cultural Relations through activities such as establishment of chairs of Hindi language in universities abroad, scholarship and fellowships to foreign students to study Hindi, internationally distributed publications such as “Gagananchal”, and holding of international conferences pertaining to Hindi.

Back in 2015 we covered the very first Autonomous Desk, and its humble beginnings. Airbus is one of the biggest manufacturers of aircraft for commercial aviation in the world. The company has announced that it will be ending production of the A380 aircraft in 2021. The end of production for the aircraft comes as Emirates airlines decide to reduce the number of A380 aircraft it had ordered by 39 units. As Emirates cut its A380 orders, it ordered 40 A330neo and 30 A350 commercial aircraft. With the Emirates order reduction, Airbus says that it has no substantial backlog of aircraft despite the sales efforts with other airlines in recent years. Airbus notes that the consequences of its decision to end production in 2021 is embedded in its 2018 full year results.Airbus says that the A380 is an “outstanding engineering and industrial achievement” it also notes that passengers globally love to fly on the aircraft. It says that the announcement of the end of production for the aircraft is “painful for us.”Airbus’ Tom Enders noted that the A380 aircraft will be flying for many years to come and that Airbus will continue to support the aircraft. Emirates notes that the A380 is its flagship aircraft and that the aircraft contributed to its success over the years.Another consequence of the end of the A380 comes in workers who are in that A380 supply chain. Airbus says that it will start discussions with its social partners in the coming weeks to talk about the positions potentially impacted over the next three years. The end of production could put as many as 3,500 workers out of a job. The ramp-up of the A320 aircraft and new orders from Emirates will mean a “significant number” of internal mobility opportunities according to Airbus.

Users can download the Windows 10 May 2019 update starting today, though Microsoft cautions that it is taking a ‘measured and throttled approach’ to the release. Users who want the update as soon as possible can manually check for downloads; everyone else can keep tabs on the release through Windows release health dashboard. Though the Windows 10 May 2019 update (version 1903) is now rolling out to all users, Microsoft is issuing the update very slowly. The ample caution follows a long release preview phase that aimed to avoid the overlooked bug issue that impacted the version 1809 rollout late last year. In its wider release announcement today, Microsoft stressed that it is taking this release slowly in order to ‘study device health data’ as availability increases. Some users will not immediately have access to the May 2019 release due this ‘throttled’ approach; anyone can manually check for the update now, however.To see whether you have the option to update, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on your Windows 10 machine. Select “Check for updates” and, assuming you see the “Download and install now option,” initiate the update process. If you don’t see that option, according to Microsoft, you’ll need to wait until the update rolls your way.AdChoices广告The new Windows release health dashboard detailed in the video above is now available, as well. This dashboard provides the present rollout status for an update, as well as any issues known to impact it. Consumer Reports (CR) recently ranked autonomous driving systems for the first time and in that test, it pitted Cadillac against Tesla, Nissan, and Volvo. Tesla’s Autopilot system is the partially autonomous driving tech that we hear about most, but Cadillac has a similar system called Super Cruise. In CR’s testing, the Cadillac system came out on top. Part of the reason CR ranked the Cadillac system higher is because it feels that the system does more to ensure the car is being operated safely and that the driver is paying attention. Both the Cadillac and Tesla system used similar hardware with cameras, radar, and other sensors. Mapping data is sometimes used to keep the cars moving on the intended path. Cadillac also has a camera that looks at the driver to ensure they are paying attention.While neither system is intended to provide autonomous operation, the systems can help reduce driver fatigue and prevent accidents in heavy traffic. The publication noted in its testing that these systems do add additional risk for drivers if the systems allow operation in situations where drivers feel as if they don’t need to pay attention.CR’s rankings put Cadillac Super Cruise first, Tesla Autopilot second, Nissan/Infiniti ProPilot Assist third, and Volvo Pilot Assist fourth. Nissan’s system good at keeping drivers engaged. Autopilot did outscore super Cruise in capability and performance, as well as ease of use. Autopilot scored lower than Super Cruise in being clear when safe to use, keeping the driver engaged, and handling unresponsive drivers. Test rankings for the Volvo system weren’t good, but it did outscore Tesla in keeping the driver engaged. CR went so far in testing as to call Volvo and ask why it was marketing its system for “autonomous driving” on its website and Volvo changed the wording.SOURCE: CR

While the CLA 45 isn’t a sports car by a purist’s definition, adding to the sportier driving experience is torque vectoring on the rear wheels. That allows for variable amounts of torque to be transferred to the front and rear, and then from left to right, according to traction, drive mode, and driving style.A fast car requires equally effective brakes. The CLA 45 pairs its 235/55 R 19 tires with 13.8-inch discs with four-piston calipers at the front, and nearly-matching 13-inch brake discs with single-piston calipers at the rear.AdChoices广告The unique all-wheel drive setup allows for an optionally available drift mode, for those seeking an even more thrilling driving experience. It pushes all of the power to the rear axle, trading grip for fun going sideways. Having experienced the E63’s rear-wheel bias on an ice track, I can first hand-attest to how much more entertaining it can be, just as long as you’ve got the right track to safely do so. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, though buyers have the option to unleash the engine’s potent power for a higher top speed of 168 mph – and get adaptive dampers at the same time – by ticking the AMG Driver’s Package. Peak torque arrives at 4,750 rpm to 5,000 rpm, and the engine redlines at 7,200 rpm. In AMG’s eyes, the power band’s on par with a naturally aspirated engine. Differentiating from the A-Class, CLA owners enjoy more form-fitting seats – with red accent stitching to match the red seat belts – and an AMG steering wheel. Similar to Audi’s RS line, the instrument clusters display additional info that more engaged drivers might care about. Opting for the Track Pace package adds additional telemetry data: g force, throttle and brake position, on top of engine/oil, selected gear and track time. It’s all served up on the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, which is optional on the CLA 250.Mercedes’ dual display infotainment system is one of the best in the class. Alongside the driver’s instrumentation panel is a 10.25-inch touchscreen, from which you control all aspects of the vehicle. One of my favorite features is the natural-language voice control, which can handle not only vehicle settings but answer general knowledge questions and more. Just how far can you squeeze a turbo-four? If you’re Mercedes-AMG, then the answer is to record-setting levels, with the new M139 hailed as the world’s most powerful series-production turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four. That’s found a home under the shapely hood of the new AMG CLA 45, where it’s good for 382 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. For those keeping track, that’s 7 hp more than the the first-generation CLA 45. The Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago is the first federal appellate court to hear arguments in cases challenging the mandate that took effect last August for most employers to cover contraception, including the morning-after pill, in workers’ insurance plans without out-of-pocket costs (Kesling and Radnofsky, 5/22).The Washington Post: Some Business Owners Resist Providing Employees With Contraceptive CoverageReligiously devout business owners are waging a broad rebellion against providing their employees with contraceptive coverage, bringing dozens of lawsuits that seem certain to land the issue before the Supreme Court. The company owners say their religious beliefs take precedence over a new federal requirement, contained in President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, that they give employees insurance that covers contraceptives (Barnes, 5/22).The Associated Press/Washington Post: Hobby Lobby Appeal Tests Limits Of Federal Birth-Control Coverage MandateIn the most prominent challenge of its kind, Hobby Lobby Stores Inc. is asking a federal appeals court Thursday for an exemption from part of the federal health care law that requires it to offer employees health coverage that includes access to the morning-after pill. The Oklahoma City-based arts-and-crafts chain argues that businesses — not just the currently exempted religious groups — should be allowed to seek exception from that part of the health law if it violates their religious beliefs (5/23).USA Today: Incentives Push Doctors To Electronic Medical RecordsMore than half of doctors’ offices and 80% of hospitals that provide Medicare or Medicaid will have electronic health records by the end of the year, the Department of Health and Human Services announced Wednesday (Kennedy, 5/22).The New York Times’ Bucks Blog: Family Medical Costs Still RisingThe good news is health care costs are going up more slowly. The bad news is that families continue to see larger medical bills. The typical cost to cover a family of four now exceeds $22,000, including the amount paid in insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs, according to the latest Milliman Medical Index for 2013. Milliman, an actuarial and benefits consultant, puts the cost at slightly less than the amount a family might pay to send a child to an in-state public college for a year (Abelson, 5/22).Los Angeles Times: Geography Has A Role In Elective Surgery Decisions, Study FindsGeography plays a role in whether patients in California have elective operations such as joint replacement, weight loss surgery and gallbladder removal, according to a new study.
