Richard Branson I Dont Believe That Retirement Should Be the Goal

first_imgRichard Branson Register Now » Since leaving school at age 16 to start his first business, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson has overseen hundreds of companies and accumulated a fortune of approximately $5 billion. The self-made billionaire could retire at the drop of a dime — but retirement is the last thing on the 66-year-old’s mind.”I don’t believe that retirement should be the goal,” he wrote in a recent blog post.Branson’s perspective is inspired by British philosopher Alan Watts, who discouraged people from thinking of life as a journey. A journey implies a destination or some sort of arrival — but no epic “thing” is coming in life, Watts said.”He explains that traditional systems of education have skewed the meaning of life (towards arriving at a destination) by placing too much importance on progressing through school and college to a career,” Branson wrote. “And makes his point by saying that far too many people live to retire and therefore cheat themselves of an exciting existence.”That’s why Branson doesn’t think retirement should be the goal. “Instead, I think happiness should be,” he wrote.”I’ve never thought [of] work as work and play as play; to me, it’s all living and learning. The way I see it, life is all about striving and growing. The Tech Industrys Real Problem With Diversity Is Clear Its Not The

first_img Elizabeth Ames The Tech Industry’s Real Problem With Diversity Is Clear. It’s Not The Pipeline. For women in Silicon Valley, 2017 has been a watershed year. We’ve seen women technologists share their stories of sexual harassment and bias, shocking industry outsiders and even many male colleagues. Susan Fowler’s blog post blew the lid off of Uber’s sexual harassment issues and hostile culture. Soon thereafter, a crew of female entrepreneurs turned a spotlight on blatant sexual harassment in the venture capital world. Neither of these stories surprised women or minorities who work in tech, but—finally—people were listening.Related Video: See Inclusion as a Growth StrategyThe antidiversity screed penned by ex-Google engineer James Damore isn’t so surprising, either. As women and members of minority groups speak out and make gains, it’s inevitable that we’ll see pushback from those who benefit from the existing system. The points that Damore made in his now-infamous manifesto aren’t supported by the facts and are profoundly offensive to many, but in today’s world of “fake news” they’re fair game as “free speech.”Related: That Infamous Google Memo Says Plenty About What’s Wrong With Tech and Why It’s So Hard to Talk AboutLet’s be real: Women technologists and other minority tech workers face consistent, entrenched bias every single day. Damore’s screed is proof of that. Who wants to work with someone who clearly believes that gender makes them less qualified? Who wants to have that same person weighing in on their performance review? And who wants to be prejudged based on their gender before they’ve even walked in the door? I think we can all agree that every worker deserves to work in a harassment-free environment where they are evaluated based on their skills, abilities and accomplishments.Women leave technology careers at a rate twice as high as their male counterparts due to exactly this sort of bias, harassment and cultural hostility. Scandals like the Google memo make it doubly hard for girls and women to feel welcome as they pursue jobs at tech companies.Related: 3 Reasons Why Gender Equality is an ‘Everyone’ IssueWomen at Google are in a bind: Speaking out puts them at risk of being targeted. But now is exactly the right time for women and other marginalized technologists to tell their stories and make clear the daily human toll of bias and harassment. They need to talk about what they’ve achieved, and the reasons why they live and breathe for engineering and computer science. They need to share their dreams because, counter to prejudicial notions, women actually are ambitious, smart and, yes, even aggressive. They also must confront the bias they live with, along with a stunning lack of opportunity, advancement and recognition.Related: Uber Under Fire Once Again Following Sexism and Harassment ClaimsWe all need, now more than ever, to celebrate the women in our midst who are changing the tech world every day. Women and minority technologists will overcome these challenges by staying strong together, and forging stronger connections to the community. How to Create Your Own StateoftheArt Text Generation System

first_img Tagged In googleartificial intelligenceextremetech explainsdevelopersHow-Toprogrammingtensorflowpythonopenaifake newsgoogle compute engineGoogle ColabGPT-2text generation Post a Comment 4 Comments Huge Scandals That Rocked The History Channel Hardly a day goes by when there isn’t a story about fake news. It reminds me of a quote from the favorite radio newsman from my youth, “If you don’t like the news, go out and make some of your own.” OpenAI’s breakthrough language model, the 1.5 billion parameter version of GPT-2, got close enough that the group decided it was too dangerous to release publicly, at least for now. However, OpenAI has now released two smaller versions of the model, along with tools for fine-tuning them on your own text. So, without too much effort, and using dramatically less GPU time than it would take to train from scratch, you can create a tuned version of GPT-2 that will be able to generate text in the style you give it, or even start to answer questions similar to ones you train it with. What Makes GPT-2 SpecialGPT-2 (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer version 2) is based on a version of the very powerful Transformer Attention-based Neural Network. What got the researchers at OpenAI so excited about it was finding that it could address a number of language tasks without being directly trained on them. Once pre-trained with its massive corpus of Reddit data and given the proper prompts, it did a passable job of answering questions and translating languages. It certainly isn’t anything like Watson as far as semantic knowledge, but this type of unsupervised learning is particularly exciting because it removes much of the time and expense needed to label data for supervised learning.Overview of Working With GPT-2For such a powerful tool, the process of working with GPT-2 is thankfully fairly simple, as long as you are at least a little familiar with Tensorflow. Most of the tutorials I’ve found also rely on Python, so having at least a basic knowledge of programming in Python or a similar language is very helpful. Currently, OpenAI has released two pre-trained versions of GPT-2. One (117M) has 117 million parameters, while the other (345M) has 345 million. As you might expect the larger version requires more GPU memory and takes longer to train. You can train either on your CPU, but it is going to be really slow. The first step is downloading one or both of the models. Fortunately, most of the tutorials, including the ones we’ll walk you through below, have Python code to do that for you. Once downloaded, you can run the pre-trained model either to generate text automatically or in response to a prompt you provide. But there is also code that lets you build on the pre-trained model by fine-tuning it on a data source of your choice. Once you’ve tuned your model to your satisfaction, then it’s simply a matter of running it and providing suitable prompts.Working with GPT-2 On Your Local MachineThere are a number of tutorials on this, but my favorite is by Max Woolf. In fact, until the OpenAI release, I was working with his text-generating RNN, which he borrowed from for his GPT-2 work. He’s provided a full package on GitHub for downloading, tuning, and running a GPT-2 based model. You can even snag it directly as a package from PyPl. The readme walks you through the entire process, with some suggestions on how to tweak various parameters. If you happen to have a massive GPU handy, this is a great approach, but since the 345M model needs most of a 16GB GPU for training or tuning, you may need to turn to a cloud GPU.Working with GPT-2 for Free Using Google’s ColabFortunately, there is a way to use a powerful GPU in the cloud for free — Google’s Colab. It isn’t as flexible as an actual Google Compute Engine account, and you have to reload everything each session, but did I mention it’s free? In my testing, I got either a Tesla T4 or a K80 GPU when I initialized a notebook, either one of which is fast enough to train these models at a reasonable clip. The best part is that Woolf has already authored a Colab notebook that echoes the local Python code version of gpt2-simple. Much like the desktop version, you can simply follow along, or tweak parameters to experiment. There is some added complexity in getting the data in and out of Colab, but the notebook will walk you through that as well.Getting Data for Your ProjectNow that powerful language models have been released onto the web, and tutorials abound on how to use them, the hardest part of your project might be creating the dataset you want to use for tuning. If you want to replicate the experiments of others by having it generate Shakespeare or write Star Trek dialog, you can simply snag one that is online. In my case, I wanted to see how the models would do when asked to generate articles like those found on ExtremeTech. I had access to a back catalog of over 12,000 articles from the last 10 years. So I was able to put them together into a text file, and use it as the basis for fine-tuning.If you have other ambitions that include mimicking a website, scraping is certainly an alternative. There are some sophisticated services like ParseHub, but they are limited unless you pay for a commercial plan. I have found the Chrome Extension to be flexible enough for many applications, and it’s fast and free. One big cautionary note is to pay attention to Terms of Service for whatever website you’re thinking of, as well as any copyright issues. From looking at the output of various language models, they certainly aren’t taught to not plagiarize. So, Can It Do Tech Journalism?Once I had my corpus of 12,000 ExtremeTech articles, I started by trying to train the simplified GPT-2 on my desktop’s Nvidia 1080 GPU. Unfortunately, the GPU’s 8GB of RAM wasn’t enough. So I switched to training the 117M model on my 4-core i7. It wasn’t insanely terrible, but it would have taken over a week to make a real dent even with the smaller of the two models. So I switched to Colab and the 345M model. The training was much, much, faster, but needing to deal with session resets and the unpredictability of which GPU I’d get for each session was annoying.Upgrading to Google’s Compute EngineAfter that, I bit the bullet, signed up for a Google Compute Engine account, and decided to take advantage of the $300 credit Google gives new customers. If you’re not familiar with setting up a VM in the cloud it can be a bit daunting, but there are lots of online guides. It’s simplest if you start with one of the pre-configured VMs that already has Tensorflow installed. I picked a Linux version with 4 vCPUs. Even though my desktop system is Windows, the same Python code ran perfectly on both. You then need to add a GPU, which in my case took a request to Google support for permission. I assume that is because GPU-equipped machines are more expensive and less flexible than CPU-only machines, so they have some type of vetting process. It only took a couple of hours, and I was able to launch a VM with a Tesla T4. When I first logged in (using the built-in SSH) it reminded me that I needed to install Nvidia drivers for the T4, and gave me the command I needed.Next, you need is to set up a file transfer client like WinSCP, and get started working with your model. Once you upload your code and data, create a Python virtual environment (optional), and load up the needed packages, you can proceed the same way you did on your desktop. I trained my model in increments of 15,000 steps and downloaded the model checkpoints each time, so I’d have them for reference. That can be particularly important if you have a small training dataset, as too much training can cause your model to over-fit and actually get worse. So having checkpoints you can return to is valuable.Speaking of checkpoints, like the models, they’re large. So you’ll probably want to add a disk to your VM. By having the disk separate, you can always use it for other projects. The process for automatically mounting it is a bit annoying (it seems like it could be a checkbox, but it’s not). Fortunately, you only have to do it once. After I had my VM up and running with the needed code, model, and training data, I let it loose. The T4 was able to run about one step every 1.5 seconds. The VM I’d configured cost about $25/day (remember that VMs don’t turn themselves off; you need to shut them down if you don’t want to be billed, and persistent disk keeps getting billed even then). To save some money, I transferred the model checkpoints (as a .zip file) back to my desktop. I could then shut down the VM (saving a buck or two an hour), and interact with the model locally. You get the same output either way because the model and checkpoint are identical. The traditional way to evaluate the success of your training is to hold out a portion of your training data as a validation set. If the loss continues to decrease but accuracy (which you get by computing the loss when you run your model on the data you’ve held out for validation) decreases, it is likely you’ve started to over-fit your data and your model is simply “memorizing” your input and feeding it back to you. That reduces its ability to deal with new information. Here’s the Beef: Some Sample Outputs After Days of TrainingAfter experimenting on various types of prompts, I settled on feeding the model (which I’ve nicknamed The Oracle) the first sentences of actual ExtremeTech articles and seeing what it came up with. After 48 hours (106,000 steps in this case) of training on a T4, here is an example:The output of our model after two days of training on a T4 when fed the first sentence of Ryan Whitwam’s Titan article. Obviously, it’s not going to fool anyone, but the model is starting to do a decent job of linking similar concepts together at this point. The more information the model has about a topic, the more it starts to generate plausible text. We write about Windows Update a lot, so I figured I’d let the model give it a try:The model’s response to a prompt about Windows Update after a couple of days of training. With something as subjective as text generation, it is hard to know how far to go with training a model. That’s particularly true because each time a prompt is submitted, you’ll get a different response. If you want to get some plausible or amusing answers, your best bet is to generate several samples for each prompt and look through them yourself. In the case of the Windows Update prompt, we fed the model the same prompt after another few hours of training, and it looked like the extra work might have been helpful:After another few hours of training, here is the best of the samples when given the same prompt about Microsoft Windows. Here’s Why Unsupervised Models are So CoolI was impressed, but not blown away, by the raw predictive performance of GPT-2 (at least the public version) compared with simpler solutions like textgenrnn. What I didn’t catch on to until later was the versatility. GPT-2 is general purpose enough that it can address a wide variety of use cases. For example, if you give it pairs of French and English sentences as a prompt, followed by only a French sentence, it does a plausible job of generating translations. Or if you give it question-and-answer pairs, followed by a question, it does a decent job of coming up with a plausible answer. If you generate some interesting text or articles, please consider sharing, as this is definitely a learning experience for all of us.Now Read:Google Fed a Language Algorithm Math Equations. Nvidia Built One of the Most Powerful AI Supercomputers in 3 Weeks

But they also hold the promise of safer transportation—and far fewer jobs—in the relatively near future. To help these vehicles upgrade their intelligence from causing fatal accidents to preventing them, Nvidia created the DGX SuperPod, an AI-optimized supercomputer that can help design a better self-driving car.Nvidia made it very clear it wants to be amongst the leaders in artificial intelligence and decided to build a supercomputer to demonstrate that. It only took the company three weeks to build by connecting 96 Nvidia DGX-2H supercomputers with Mellanox interconnect technology. You can actually buy it, too, if the novelty of your sixth yacht has worn off and you have $435,000 burning a hole in your pocket.  That’s how much one DGX-2H costs at list price. The DGX SuperPod uses 96 of them. If you want to make a self-driving car, it seems Nvidia thinks it’ll cost somewhere in the ballpark of $41,760,000 to get started with the best hardware. Clearly, these systems were designed for large corporations.Image credit: NVIDIAWith 1,536 Nvidia V100 Tensor Core GPUs, the SuperPod packs a lot of power for a relatively small system (by supercomputer standards). Nevertheless, if you want people to invest in anything that expensive you might want to prove that it’s up to the toughest of tasks. That’s why Nvidia decided to make its SuperPod build assist in solving one of the most difficult problems in AI.Autonomous vehicles require an enormous amount of training data compared with technologies that use similar image classification models for other purposes (e.g. diagnostic medicine). The AI in a self-driving car isn’t looking for something specific and it needs to consider all of its surroundings and understand them well enough to safely function. That amounts in approximately one terabyte of data per vehicle per hour and the AI that powers autonomous vehicles needs to retrain itself continuously over time using data from an entire fleet. Nvidia decided to demonstrate how its SuperPod can help expedite the processing of training data measured in petabytes:The system is hard at work around the clock, optimizing autonomous driving software and retraining neural networks at a much faster turnaround time than previously possible.  For example, the DGX SuperPod hardware and software platform takes less than two minutes to train ResNet-50. When this AI model came out in 2015, it took 25 days to train on the then state-of-the-art system, a single Nvidia K80 GPU. DGX SuperPOD delivers results that are 18,000x faster.  While other TOP500 systems with similar performance levels are built from thousands of servers, DGX SuperPOD takes a fraction of the space, roughly 400x smaller than its ranked neighbors. While the DGX-2H happens to perform best using ResNet-50, those numbers would remain impressive when scaled for just about any image classification model. You should expect impressive performance from a multi-million dollar system, but accomplishing that at such a small (relative) size it’s clear why Nvidia has remained dominant the AI hardware market. What kind of advancements might such capable hardware lead to?  Nvidia demonstrated that as well with a new and more accurate method of calculating distance from objects in three-dimensional space so autonomous vehicles can more easily prevent collisions.Nvidia explains some of the key areas where this new approach helps to improve safety:[W]e use convolutional neural networks and data from a single front camera. The DNN is trained to predict the distance to objects by using radar and lidar sensor data as ground-truth information. Engineers know this information is accurate because direct reflections of transmitted radar and lidar signals pro precise distance-to-object information, regardless of a road’s topology.  By training the neural networks on radar and lidar data instead of relying on the flat ground assumption, we enable the DNN to estimate distance to objects from a single camera, even when the vehicle is going up or down hill.It seems like Nvidia has some new advancement in artificial intelligence on almost a weekly basis—even if it’s just a more efficient method of turning your dog into a lion. Perhaps that’s because the company can build one of the most efficiently powerful supercomputers in the world in three weeks. When you don’t have to wait very long to process an enormous amount of data, you can quickly test new ideas and find the optimal solution a lot faster. You just need around $40 million dollars to get started.Top image credit: NvidiaNow read:Nvidia Crushes Self to Take AI Benchmark CrownGoogle’s EfficientNet Offers up to a 10x Boost in Image Analysis EfficiencyNvidia AI Turns Doodles Into Realistic Landscapes<span data-mce-type=”bookmark” style=”display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;” class=”mce_SELRES_start”></span> Reality TV Scandals We Never Saw Coming Cartoon Episodes So Controversial They Were Banned The Sad Situation That Hayden Panettiere Is Living In Today Paul Walker’s Daughter is Head-Turningly Gorgeous Now at 20 Nvidia Built One of the Most Powerful AI Supercomputers in 3 Weeks Facebook Twitter Linkedin Pinterest Google Plus Reddit Hacker News Flipboard Email Copy 41shares This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Its lowest pricing package of RMB10/month aroused the widespread attention of the whole industry. This is another important move after China Mobile announced “5G+ Plan” for the purpose of spreading 5G on the mass consumer market. However, although China’s 5G construction capability has already taken the lead in the world, the pace of 5G+ is still hindered by some cruxes, especially in UHD segment with pioneering efforts for 5G applications. At Global 5G UHD Industry Summit during MWC 2019, which was jointly organized by MIGU, Shanghai Jinqiao (Group) Co., Ltd. and Global Virtual Reality Conference Organizing Committee, leaders of Huawei, Sony China, Cameron Pace Group, BesTV, China Sports Media, China UHD Video Industry Alliance, 5G Multimedia Innovation Alliance and other worldwide UHD put their heads together and discussed the challenges and opportunities for the industry.Three major pain spots of the whole industry are insufficient supply of UHD video capabilities, shortcomings of key technologies (such as acquisition and production) and no popularization of consumer-grade terminals at the user level. Wang Bin, CEO of MIGU Video, pointed out that these pain spots lead to the immature UHD industry chain.Yan Xing, Vice President of Industry Development, Huawei Technologies, also pointed out: “Currently, 80 operators draw blueprints for UHD video services all over the world. There are 200 UHD video channels overseas, but there are only two UHD video channels in China“. According to him, from another perspective, the existing pain spots of 5G+ UHD industry really affords important opportunities, and the most important opportunity lies in UHD Content Production.Wen Xiaojun, Secretary-general of China UHD Video Industry Alliance, also commented that consumer-grade terminal mode and closed loop haven’t taken shape up to now. The business model between upstream production content, TV stations and consumers hasn’t been completely integrated. It is uncertain when these things will occur in the market.Marketing Technology News: Anexinet Continues Growth Under New OwnershipPromising Outlook: Joining Hands with Partners to Jointly Build an Ecosystem and Be Poised to 5G+ Wave with Tremendous CourageFaced with the existing pain spots of 5G+ UHD industry and the increasingly fierce global 5G competition, with a view to corner overtaking in 5G+ Era, Chinese enterprises should not only take fast pace, but also promote the all-round development and balanced development of the industry, and work together to build a favorable ecosystem. In this regard, MIGU makes full preparations. China Mobile will invest RMB3 billion to implement a plan of “5G+ UHD Enabling Digital Content Industry Innovation and Development”, which will be put into practice by MIGU. As an all-scenario immersive platform affiliated to China Mobile, MIGU has been deeply involved in video, music, reading, animation, game and other content segments for nearly five years. MIGU tapped into sports content industry during the FIFA World Cup 2018. Up to now, MIGU presents 350 live 4K sports events and live artistic performances, while its HD content library ranks first in the industry.Committed to boosting ecosystem construction of 5G UHD industry, MIGU initiated the establishment of 5G Multimedia Innovation Alliance (5MII), the first-ever alliance for digital content in China. 5MII not only comprises the entire industry chain of digital content production, transmission, dissemination and consumption, but also vigorously pushes forward media technology application and business model innovation in the context of 5G. Currently, 44 industry partners have been united of one mind. Two standards have been submitted to International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and projects have been approved for initiation. Nearly 20 collaboration research tasks have been carried out. A number of key project achievements have been made. The y new impetus has been injected into innovation and development of digital content industry. The seed, sowed by China Mobile in the field of UHD, has already broken through the soil and sprouted. With the advent of the first year of Commercial 5G, MIGU, which boasts dual advantages of 5G+ UHD technology and content, will further thrive by leaps and bounds. In order to help strengthen the UHD content production pool, during MWC 2019, MIGU also signs contracts with China Hualu Group Co., Ltd., Mango Excellent Media Co., Ltd., Wanda Film Holding Co., Ltd., International Skating Union, Real Club Deportivo Espanyol, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and other partners, with a view to profoundly figuring out sports and entertainment IP content, expanding 5G+ UHD ecosphere and promoting sound development of the industry ecosystem.Marketing Technology News: Connected TV is Transforming the Digital Advertising Ecosystem: ExtremLatest Video Benchmarks Report Shows 49% of Video Ad Impressions Going to CTVIn addition, MIGU has also launched 5G+UHD Video Industry Demonstration Base together with Administration Committee of Jinqiao Economic and Technological Development Zone and Shanghai Jinqiao (Group) Co., Ltd. Three parties will jointly establish a national-level UHD joint laboratory. This is of great significance for propelling two-way enabling of 5G technology and UHD, exerting superposition effect and accelerating the innovation and development of China’s UHD industry. The unveiling of 5G and the growth of MIGU simultaneously take place. As the national team in the new media industry, MIGU will unswervingly insist on openness and integration, join hands with all partners to solve the industry development problems, and be poised to 5G+ UHD wave with tremendous courage.last_img read more

After ModiShah Rap Pragya Thakur Opts for Selfimposed Ban to Observe 63Hour

first_imgBhopal: BJP’s Bhopal Lok Sabha seat candidate Pragya Singh Thakur, who recently kicked up a row with some of her remarks, on Monday apologised for it and said she is observing “silence” for 63 hours as a mark of penance.Thakur, an accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, said she felt it was now time for some “soul searching”. The BJP leader last week courted controversy by calling Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse a “patriot”.Prior to it, she claimed that the then Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare was killed in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks due to her “curse”.Taking a dim view of her remarks on Godse, the BJP said it did not agree with her.Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he will never forgive Thakur for insulting Mahatma Gandhi. An aide of Thakur told PTI that she began observing a ’21 prahar maun’ (63 hours silence) from Monday morning.Thakur, in a tweet, also apologised for her remarks. “After the poll process, time has arrived for soul searching. During this period, if my words have hurt the patriots, I apologise for it. As per the decorum of public life and to repent, I am observing a 21-prahar silence and will undergo hard penance,” she said in a tweet in Hindi.Following some of Thakur’s controversial statements, the Election Commission had imposed a 72-hour ban on her from campaigning in the Lok Sabha polls. Dilip Ghosh to Follow Titfortat Policy to Counter Mamata Brigade in Bengal

first_img BJPdilip ghoshLok Sabha elections 2019Mamata Banerjee First Published: May 24, 2019, 5:11 PM IST Kolkata: West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh Friday criticised TMC for allegedly letting loose violence on the party’s workers in the state since the Lok Sabha polls and said BJP would follow the ‘tit for tat’ policy to counter it.He urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to take her party’s poor showing in the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls in the “right spirit”. “The TMC is unable to concede defeat. It should take the results in the right spirit. If TMC tries to use violence as a tool to intimidate and attack our workers then we will answer them in the same coin. We will follow the policy of tit-for-tat,” Ghosh said.He along with several other BJP MPs from Bengal were felicitated at the party’s state headquarters. The people have given Banerjee a “befitting reply” for her arrogance, Ghosh said and claimed that the opposition candidates and leaders were heckled and assaulted by TMC goons in an unprecedented way.”The people of Bengal have reposed their faith in us. They want an end to TMC’s misrule in Bengal and have chosen BJP as an alternative,” he said.Asked whether BJP would allow entry to TMC leaders who would like to switch over, he said the doors of the party are open for those who want to fight against TMC.Bengal like the rest of the country witnessed a saffron surge on Thursday with the BJP winning 18 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state, up from just two in 2014.TMC has won 22 seats this time, down from 34 in 2014.The saffron party also gave the TMC a run for its money bagging 40.25 per cent of the vote share counted so far compared to 43.28 per cent clinched by TMC. last_img read more

first_img external affairsHindimeaofficial language First Published: July 4, 2019, 8:49 PM IST New Delhi: The Union government has made “sustained efforts” to publicise Hindi and spent Rs 43.48 crore over the past five years to propagate the language worldwide through diplomatic missions and posts, the External Affairs Ministry said Thursday.Responding to a question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs V Muraleedharan said the government has made sustained efforts for acceptance of Hindi as an official language of the United Nations and its propagation across the world. According to UN’s procedure, getting Hindi accepted as an official language involves adoption of a resolution by the General Assembly with at least two-thirds of its membership. Besides, the additional expenditure will have to be borne by all UN member-states.Muraleedharan said the government has allocated and spent Rs 43.48 crore over five years to publicise Hindi worldwide through diplomatic missions and posts abroad.”The details of the funds spent over the last five years are: Rs 2.88 crore (2014-15); Rs 10.88 crore (2015-16); Rs 5.01 crore (2016-17); Rs 3.54 crore (2017-18) and Rs 21.17 crore (2018-19),” he said.He said India signed an MoU with the UN Secretariat in March 2018 for an initial period of two years to increase the volume and frequency of Hindi content produced by the UN.”In July 2018, UN launched Hindi versions of its social media content on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Autonomous Smart Desk 3 has a sideways touchscreen

first_imgThe Autonomous Smart Desk 3 has an embedded touchscreen display that’ll tell you when to stand up or sit down. This desk is also a standing desk – as you might have guessed – that’s motorized for ease in rising. It’s the touchscreen, though, that I’ve found strangest – as it’s embedded at an angle, aimed at the user in the center. Story TimelineStir Kinetic Desk pairs Fitbit for height-adjustable health trackingNextDesk CrossOver makes any desk a standing deskThis desk changed my lifeUpDesk UpWrite Standing Desk ReviewLifeSpan TR1200-DT7 Treadmill Desk Review: Because sitting is killing you This touchscreen device does not run Android, as you might expect. Instead it runs Autonomous OS 1.0, and connects with Bluetooth (for music) and Wi-Fi (for internet). This touchscreen requires its own power (of course), which is provided by a cord which runs under the desk. This touchscreen connects wirelessly (with Bluetooth) to the user’s smartphone to interact with a variety of apps. It can connect to both Android and iOS operating systems, and has a variety of functions right out the box. While this touchscreen’s processing does equate to somewhat of an artificial intelligence, it isn’t exactly Autonomous’ first. Back in 2015 we covered the very first Autonomous Desk, and its humble beginnings. This most recent SmartDesk 3 works with a lowest height of 24-inches (609mm) and a highest height of 50-inches (1270mm). It’s made with industrial-grade steel and has a lifting power of 300 lbs. This desk is available in three different colors: Black, White, or Grayscale. The Autonomous SmartDesk 3 is available for purchase through Autonomous’s store online. They can be found at Autonomous (dot) AI, and they’ve got the desk available for $500 as an “early bird special”, after which it’ll be $600 USD.Of note – this desk is exceedingly similar to a desk we’ve seen in the past. Have a peek at the Stir Kinetic Desk M1 and see what you make of it. Stir decided to place their touchscreen straight-on – wild!center_img It makes sense, when you think about where you’d put a tablet on a desk. The tablet wouldn’t necessarily sit flush with the desk’s edge, it’d be aimed sideways, aimed at you. That’s what the folks at Autonomous have decided to run with for their own embedded (read: non-moving) touchscreen display. last_img read more

Airbus A380 aircraft deliveries to end in 2021

first_imgAirbus is one of the biggest manufacturers of aircraft for commercial aviation in the world. The company has announced that it will be ending production of the A380 aircraft in 2021. The end of production for the aircraft comes as Emirates airlines decide to reduce the number of A380 aircraft it had ordered by 39 units. As Emirates cut its A380 orders, it ordered 40 A330neo and 30 A350 commercial aircraft. With the Emirates order reduction, Airbus says that it has no substantial backlog of aircraft despite the sales efforts with other airlines in recent years. Airbus notes that the consequences of its decision to end production in 2021 is embedded in its 2018 full year results.Airbus says that the A380 is an “outstanding engineering and industrial achievement” it also notes that passengers globally love to fly on the aircraft. It says that the announcement of the end of production for the aircraft is “painful for us.”Airbus’ Tom Enders noted that the A380 aircraft will be flying for many years to come and that Airbus will continue to support the aircraft. Emirates notes that the A380 is its flagship aircraft and that the aircraft contributed to its success over the years.Another consequence of the end of the A380 comes in workers who are in that A380 supply chain. Airbus says that it will start discussions with its social partners in the coming weeks to talk about the positions potentially impacted over the next three years. The end of production could put as many as 3,500 workers out of a job. The ramp-up of the A320 aircraft and new orders from Emirates will mean a “significant number” of internal mobility opportunities according to Airbus.last_img read more

Windows 10 May 2019 Update released What you should know

first_imgStory TimelineAlexa finally gets hands-free support on Windows 10Install Windows on a Chromebook in 2019: Campfire dead, what still works?Korean government is moving from Windows to Linux The next major Windows 10 update has been released, Microsoft announced on Tuesday. Users can download the Windows 10 May 2019 update starting today, though Microsoft cautions that it is taking a ‘measured and throttled approach’ to the release. Users who want the update as soon as possible can manually check for downloads; everyone else can keep tabs on the release through Windows release health dashboard. Though the Windows 10 May 2019 update (version 1903) is now rolling out to all users, Microsoft is issuing the update very slowly. The ample caution follows a long release preview phase that aimed to avoid the overlooked bug issue that impacted the version 1809 rollout late last year. center_img In its wider release announcement today, Microsoft stressed that it is taking this release slowly in order to ‘study device health data’ as availability increases. Some users will not immediately have access to the May 2019 release due this ‘throttled’ approach; anyone can manually check for the update now, however. To see whether you have the option to update, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on your Windows 10 machine. Select “Check for updates” and, assuming you see the “Download and install now option,” initiate the update process. If you don’t see that option, according to Microsoft, you’ll need to wait until the update rolls your way.AdChoices广告The new Windows release health dashboard detailed in the video above is now available, as well. This dashboard provides the present rollout status for an update, as well as any issues known to impact it. Microsoft will use this new dashboard to release information about the May 2019 update’s progression. The new update separates Windows search and Cortana, adds the light Windows 10 theme previewed months ago, and adds a Windows sandbox features and Kaomoji support.last_img read more

Cadillac Super Cruise beats Tesla Autopilot in autonomous rankings

first_imgConsumer Reports (CR) recently ranked autonomous driving systems for the first time and in that test, it pitted Cadillac against Tesla, Nissan, and Volvo. Tesla’s Autopilot system is the partially autonomous driving tech that we hear about most, but Cadillac has a similar system called Super Cruise. In CR’s testing, the Cadillac system came out on top. Part of the reason CR ranked the Cadillac system higher is because it feels that the system does more to ensure the car is being operated safely and that the driver is paying attention. Both the Cadillac and Tesla system used similar hardware with cameras, radar, and other sensors. Mapping data is sometimes used to keep the cars moving on the intended path. Cadillac also has a camera that looks at the driver to ensure they are paying attention. While neither system is intended to provide autonomous operation, the systems can help reduce driver fatigue and prevent accidents in heavy traffic. The publication noted in its testing that these systems do add additional risk for drivers if the systems allow operation in situations where drivers feel as if they don’t need to pay attention.CR’s rankings put Cadillac Super Cruise first, Tesla Autopilot second, Nissan/Infiniti ProPilot Assist third, and Volvo Pilot Assist fourth. Nissan’s system good at keeping drivers engaged. Autopilot did outscore super Cruise in capability and performance, as well as ease of use. Autopilot scored lower than Super Cruise in being clear when safe to use, keeping the driver engaged, and handling unresponsive drivers. Test rankings for the Volvo system weren’t good, but it did outscore Tesla in keeping the driver engaged. CR went so far in testing as to call Volvo and ask why it was marketing its system for “autonomous driving” on its website and Volvo changed the wording.SOURCE: CRlast_img read more

2020 MercedesAMG CLA 45 debuts AMGs most powerful turbofour

first_img Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ (2019), Kraftstoffverbrauch kombiniert: 8,3-8,1 l/100 km; CO2-Emissionen kombiniert: 189-186 g/km // Fuel consumption combined: 8.3-8.1 l/100 km; Combined CO2 emissions: 189-186 g/km Story Timeline2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan first drive: Elegantly tech-savvyThe 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupe is 4-door seduction Mercedes-AMG saves the real monster for Europe, however. The images you see here are of the Euro-spec CLA 45 S, tuned even further for 416 hp. That, sadly, isn’t coming stateside; still, what’s on offer for those in the market should be more than sufficient, the M139 paired with an equally-fresh eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters. 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive with AMG torque control helps get you from zero to 60 in 4-seconds flat with launch control. While the CLA 45 isn’t a sports car by a purist’s definition, adding to the sportier driving experience is torque vectoring on the rear wheels. That allows for variable amounts of torque to be transferred to the front and rear, and then from left to right, according to traction, drive mode, and driving style.A fast car requires equally effective brakes. The CLA 45 pairs its 235/55 R 19 tires with 13.8-inch discs with four-piston calipers at the front, and nearly-matching 13-inch brake discs with single-piston calipers at the rear.AdChoices广告The unique all-wheel drive setup allows for an optionally available drift mode, for those seeking an even more thrilling driving experience. It pushes all of the power to the rear axle, trading grip for fun going sideways. Having experienced the E63’s rear-wheel bias on an ice track, I can first hand-attest to how much more entertaining it can be, just as long as you’ve got the right track to safely do so. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, though buyers have the option to unleash the engine’s potent power for a higher top speed of 168 mph – and get adaptive dampers at the same time – by ticking the AMG Driver’s Package. Peak torque arrives at 4,750 rpm to 5,000 rpm, and the engine redlines at 7,200 rpm. In AMG’s eyes, the power band’s on par with a naturally aspirated engine. Differentiating from the A-Class, CLA owners enjoy more form-fitting seats – with red accent stitching to match the red seat belts – and an AMG steering wheel. Similar to Audi’s RS line, the instrument clusters display additional info that more engaged drivers might care about. Opting for the Track Pace package adds additional telemetry data: g force, throttle and brake position, on top of engine/oil, selected gear and track time. It’s all served up on the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, which is optional on the CLA 250.Mercedes’ dual display infotainment system is one of the best in the class. Alongside the driver’s instrumentation panel is a 10.25-inch touchscreen, from which you control all aspects of the vehicle. One of my favorite features is the natural-language voice control, which can handle not only vehicle settings but answer general knowledge questions and more. Just how far can you squeeze a turbo-four? If you’re Mercedes-AMG, then the answer is to record-setting levels, with the new M139 hailed as the world’s most powerful series-production turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four. That’s found a home under the shapely hood of the new AMG CLA 45, where it’s good for 382 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. For those keeping track, that’s 7 hp more than the the first-generation CLA 45. Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ (2019), Kraftstoffverbrauch kombiniert: 8,3-8,1 l/100 km; CO2-Emissionen kombiniert: 189-186 g/km // Fuel consumption combined: 8.3-8.1 l/100 km; Combined CO2 emissions: 189-186 g/kmcenter_img Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ (2019), Kraftstoffverbrauch kombiniert: 8,3-8,1 l/100 km; CO2-Emissionen kombiniert: 189-186 g/km // Fuel consumption combined: 8.3-8.1 l/100 km; Combined CO2 emissions: 189-186 g/km On the outside, the CLA 45 gets AMG’s slatted Panamericana grille, with bigger lower air intakes integrated into the front bumpers. First Edition: May 23, 2013 Today’s headlines include various status updates about state activity regarding the health law’s online insurance marketplaces.  Kaiser Health News: Can My Insurer Deny Coverage For Care At An Out-Of-Network Hospital? (Video)Kaiser Health News consumer columnist Michelle Andrews answers a reader question about emergency room and out-of-network hospital cost changes under the health law (5/23). Watch the video or read the transcript.Kaiser Health News: Capsules: 11 Insurers Want To Play Ball In Colorado’s MarketplaceNow on Kaiser Health News’ blog, Phil Galewitz reports: “Colorado became the latest state Wednesday to post proposed health insurance plans for its new online marketplace, which is slated begin enrolling people in coverage Oct. 1. What stands out is the number of plans being proposed. A total of 11 insurers are seeking approval to market about 250 health plans to individuals and small groups  in the state’s online marketplace under the federal health care overhaul” (Galewitz, 5/22). Check out what else is on the blog. The Wall Street Journal: Two States Seek Help With Health ExchangesTwo states that had planned to run their own health-insurance exchanges this fall are asking the federal government for help in the first year, a sign of the obstacles states face in carrying out a centerpiece of the health-care overhaul. Idaho and New Mexico had been among a few Republican-led states that had agreed to operate their own health exchanges, which will offer a variety of insurance plans for people who don’t have coverage otherwise (Dooren, 5/22).Los Angeles Times: UnitedHealth, Aetna And Cigna Opt Out Of California ExchangeSome prominent health insurers, including industry giant UnitedHealth Group Inc., are not participating in California’s new state-run health insurance market, possibly limiting the number of choices for millions of consumers. UnitedHealth, the nation’s largest private insurer, Aetna Inc. and Cigna Corp. are sitting out the first year of Covered California, the state’s insurance exchange and a key testing ground nationally for a massive coverage expansion under the federal healthcare law (Terhune, 5/22).Politico: Clock Ticking On Full Medicaid Expansion FundsStates still mired in the fight over the Obamacare Medicaid expansion are starting to give up on their first year of full funding — and it’s unclear whether they would be able to tap into the money before 2015. Expansion remains an open question in about a dozen states after months of legislative fights. As more states continue to wrap up their budgets, some are already looking to next year’s legislative sessions as their next shot at the expansion, even amid calls for state legislatures to return for special sessions (Millman, 5/23).The Wall Street Journal: Contraception Violates Beliefs, Firms Tell CourtTwo small-business owners challenging contraception-coverage mandates in the federal health-care law told a federal appellate court Wednesday the law would force them to violate their beliefs because they run their businesses in accordance with their religious faith. The Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago is the first federal appellate court to hear arguments in cases challenging the mandate that took effect last August for most employers to cover contraception, including the morning-after pill, in workers’ insurance plans without out-of-pocket costs (Kesling and Radnofsky, 5/22).The Washington Post: Some Business Owners Resist Providing Employees With Contraceptive CoverageReligiously devout business owners are waging a broad rebellion against providing their employees with contraceptive coverage, bringing dozens of lawsuits that seem certain to land the issue before the Supreme Court. The company owners say their religious beliefs take precedence over a new federal requirement, contained in President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, that they give employees insurance that covers contraceptives (Barnes, 5/22).The Associated Press/Washington Post: Hobby Lobby Appeal Tests Limits Of Federal Birth-Control Coverage MandateIn the most prominent challenge of its kind, Hobby Lobby Stores Inc. is asking a federal appeals court Thursday for an exemption from part of the federal health care law that requires it to offer employees health coverage that includes access to the morning-after pill. The Oklahoma City-based arts-and-crafts chain argues that businesses — not just the currently exempted religious groups — should be allowed to seek exception from that part of the health law if it violates their religious beliefs (5/23).USA Today: Incentives Push Doctors To Electronic Medical RecordsMore than half of doctors’ offices and 80% of hospitals that provide Medicare or Medicaid will have electronic health records by the end of the year, the Department of Health and Human Services announced Wednesday (Kennedy, 5/22).The New York Times’ Bucks Blog: Family Medical Costs Still RisingThe good news is health care costs are going up more slowly. The bad news is that families continue to see larger medical bills. The typical cost to cover a family of four now exceeds $22,000, including the amount paid in insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs, according to the latest Milliman Medical Index for 2013. Milliman, an actuarial and benefits consultant, puts the cost at slightly less than the amount a family might pay to send a child to an in-state public college for a year (Abelson, 5/22).Los Angeles Times: Geography Has A Role In Elective Surgery Decisions, Study FindsGeography plays a role in whether patients in California have elective operations such as joint replacement, weight loss surgery and gallbladder removal, according to a new study. The California HealthCare Foundation study showed wide variations in patient surgeries across the state (Gorman, 5/22).Los Angeles Times: Most Unionized UC Hospital Workers Go To Jobs Despite StrikeAs University of California patient care workers returned to the picket lines Wednesday, hospital administrators said they were gratified that so many others chose to come to work. More than three-quarters of union members who had been scheduled to work Tuesday did so, said Dianne Klein, spokeswoman for the UC office of the president. Hospital officials said they expected a similar turnout Wednesday (Gorman, 5/22).The Associated Press/Washington Post: American Samoa To Keep Frequent Flier Miles Of Government Travelers; Use For Sick, StudentsAmerican Samoa plans to take away frequent flier miles from government workers who travel on behalf of the U.S. territory and use the loyalty points to help medical patients and students travel off the islands when necessary (5/22). Check out all of Kaiser Health News’ e-mail options including First Edition and Breaking News alerts on our Subscriptions page.last_img read more
