WILMINGTON, MA — Earlier this month, the Wilmington Board of Selectmen had a 2-hour discussion with Massachusetts Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Jay Ash, State Senator Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester), and State Representative Ken Gordon (D-Bedford) surrounding the town’s current and future efforts to attract and maintain businesses.There was one property, in particular, that kept coming up during the discussion — the Textron property at 201 & 205 Lowell Street. Textron laid off approximately 200 employees in 2016 and another 50 in 2017. After multiple rounds of downsizing over the years, very few employees remain at the once bustling Wilmington site.“We have a 60-acre parcel of land, Textron, that’s downsized to about 50 people now,” Selectman Chair Kevin Caira told Ash, Tarr and Gordon. “This is going to be a concern for the community — how will that property get developed in the future if [Textron] decides to sell?”“We don’t know what’s happening at this point in time with Textron. [Town officials] are having discussions with them to understand where they’re at,” added Caira. “But it’s 60 acres smack dab in a very attractive spot, right off of 93. Should would be looking at zoning changes now? Should we be talking to different developers?”In response, Secretary Ash stressed the importance of encouraging economic development, suggesting the Textron site could be considered in a “high growth” area.“Communities need to grow. You need more economic development,” said Ash. “Identify areas in town as ‘high growth’ areas. Preserve wherever is ‘special to you,’ but don’t shut out growth everyone else. You have great access to the highway. That’s where your high economic growth areas should be. And maybe farther into town, and farther away from the highway, are the areas where you want to discourage growth.”Selectman Mike McCoy expressed his fear that the Textron property, which is currently zoned as ‘industrial,’ could eventually be rezoned to ‘mixed use,’ which would allow for both retail and significant amounts of apartments and/or condos on the site.“That [rezoning] would change the makeup of this community forever,” McCoy told the delegation. “In Wilmington, we try to keep a country feel… It would be nice to try to maintain that small town feel that’s disappearing in other communities. Quality of life means a lot out here in the country, especially for those who moved from the city to the country to raise their families. How do we keep our small town feel?”“You want to talk about country? I drive through 351 communities. You’re urban,” responded Ash. “I don’t know the Textron property real well, but if all of sudden Textron leaves, that could your top [economic development] opportunity.”“I’m mindful of quality of life,” added Ash, “but if neighboring communities are building and building and you’re getting a lot of the traffic [and other negatives], it sounds like you’re trying to hold on to a day that’s already passed by… I acknowledge that you may want to create a growth zone in one location in town so you can purposely attain [no or little growth] in another location. But you need to find a zone where you can get the density you need and upzone.”Selectman Jonathan Eaton is worried about the town’s prospects of following below the state’s 10% affordable housing threshold, which would open up the Textron site to a potential 40B housing project, which does not need to follow local zoning regulations. Such a project would be higher, bigger, and dense than what’s normally permitted in Wilmington.“We’ve all mentioned Textron tonight and we’ve all mentioned it several times before,” said Eaton. “I do not want to get caught flatfooted. I’m very well aware of the census that is coming up in two years [which is when each community’s 40B numbers are recalculated]. The way to maintain local control is to be proactive and put a bunch of smart people in a room.”“Our problems are big. We have issues of Sonic and issues of Textron. It’s a very wide range of problems,” chimed in former Selectman Mike Champoux, who has been a longtime advocate of the town’s increasing its economic development efforts. “Sometimes when you look at an elephant, where do you start? Well, let’s just pick one and go. Let’s start to deveolop some partnerships with those land owners and see what we can do. Let’s have some discussion with the Textron folks. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Audi Engineers always want to keep turbo lag to a minimum in forced-induction engines, and Audi has a novel solution that uses electricity to tackle the problem. Like the earlier SQ7 TDI, Audi revealed Thursday that the SQ5 TDI will use an electric compressor to fight lag in the new performance crossover.The SQ5’s 3.0-liter diesel V6 engine has a traditional exhaust-driven turbocharger, but the electric compressor can kick in to provide some boost — up to 20.4 psi of it — at engine speeds below 1,650 rpm. Audi says that means “high torque is available immediately.” Total output from the engine is rated at 347 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque.The engine also has a mild-hybrid system, like many of Audi’s newest cars. A 48-volt battery works with a special belt-alternator starter, which can improve stop-start performance. The SQ5 TDI can even coast with the engine off for up to 40 seconds at a time when the 48-volt battery is fully charged.Being an Audi S model, the SQ5 TDI also has other sporty handling upgrades: torque vectoring and an optional sports rear differential for the Quattro all-wheel-drive system, a suspension that rides 1.2 inches lower than a standard SQ5, 20- or 21-inch wheels, adaptive dampers and enlarged brakes with 14.8-inch front discs.Just like the Audi SQ7 TDI, which also uses an electric turbo to help quash lag, the SQ5 TDI is not coming to the US market. The highest-performing model we’ll get here is the gasoline-fired SQ5, which boasts 354 hp from its 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine. Shown here in the tough ZR2 Bison off-road spec, the Chevy Colorado is an excellent truck and one of the two midsize pickups you can get with a diesel engine. Adding to the ZR2’s two-inch lift and front and rear locking differentials, the Bison gets beefier skid plates (trust me, that’s a good thing), steel bumpers and integrated recovery points. Heck, you can even get a snorkel.Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission, but a more popular choice is the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the 2.8-liter diesel pumps out 186 horsepower and a delicious 369 pound-feet of twist and is mated to a six-speed automatic. The Chevy Colorado is built in Wentzville, Missouri. Jeep CherokeeKeeping its top-of-the-list placement, the Jeep Cherokee is 2019’s most American-made car. Refreshed for 2019, the compact crossover now features more tech, better cargo space and a slightly tweaked look. It’s available in no fewer the nine trims, including the off-road specific Trailhawk and a fancy-pants Trailhawk Elite.For 2019, the Cherokee gets a new 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, though naturally aspirated I4 and V6 choices are also available. Regardless of engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission gets the power to the pavement — or dirt as the case may be. The Cherokee is made in Belvidere, Illinois. 2019 Acura MDX adds new features and an A-Spec model Honda PilotDropping down to seventh place for 2019 is the Honda Pilot. Like its two-row Passport sibling, the three-row Pilot offers parent-focused technology like Cabin Talk as well as myriad standard driver-assistance features through the Honda Sensing tech suite. Honda’s largest crossover offers up nearly 84 cubic feet of cargo space. Honda’s 3.5-liter V6 engine shows up again, making a serviceable 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Touring and Elite trims get a nine-speed automatic transmission while lower trims have to make do with a six-speed auto. The Cabin Watch video system lets parents keep an eye on their little darlings without turning around in their seats, while Cabin Talk amplifies their voice so no yelling is required.The Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 rated for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Most trims get a nine-speed automatic but the top Touring and Elite trims now use a 10-speed automatic with stop-start technology. The Honda Odyssey is made in Lincoln, Alabama. Chevrolet CorvetteMoving up from the 10th-place slot last year is the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette. While we’ve all been ogling the new mid-engine Corvette, it’s easy to forget what a performance bargain the current-generation ‘Vette is. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. This crossover-that-looks-like-a-truck provides a better ride than a traditional pickup and gets an awesome lockable trunk right in the floor of the bed. And it doesn’t do the truck stuff too badly, either, as it’s able to carry 1,860 pounds of payload and tow 3,500 pounds.The Ridgeline is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 good for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. That is channeled through a six-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel drive. It’s built in Lincoln, Alabama. Acura MDXMoving up one slot to sixth place on the American Made Index is the non-hybrid variant of the Acura MDX. With its SH-AWD system, the MDX is one of the better handling midsize luxury crossovers, and for 2019 the company gives us the A-Spec treatment with a new front fascia and side skirts, 20-inch wheels, wider exhaust tips, unique gauges, a new steering wheel, carbon fiber trim and various Alcantara interior touches.However, both the standard and A-Spec models get a 3.5-liter V6 engine, rated for 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque going through a nine-speed automatic transmission. The green light will always be on when it’s recording, even if you’re not home and checking on the stream from your phone. You won’t be able to use the Hub Max to secretly spy on anyone. It’s the first product under the new Google Nest brand, which combines the formerly distinct Google smart home and Nest teams. The Hub Max features a 10-inch high-definition touchscreen, powerful speakers, always-listening microphones and an embedded camera that can recognize your face.Just a few months ago, Google launched a similar but smaller product called the Google Home Hub, which will be renamed the Google Nest Hub to showcase the new brand. The Nest Hub doesn’t have a camera, and Google touted the omission as a way to give privacy-focused customers peace of mind. The camera on the Hub Max is the smartest cam on any smart display. In addition to recognizing your face, you can use it as a security monitor and get alerts if it detects motion. It’s also smart enough to recognize gestures and track your motion if you’re moving around while on a video call. The Hub Max is impressive, but it’s also potentially worrisome to have a camera like that watching you in your home. Google undoubtedly understood the concerns people would have with the Hub Max. Their default setting is to show a green light when they’re recording, but previously you could turn that off in the settings. Google is removing that option. While this move removes a customization option from the cam, it’s part of what Chandra called a new set of privacy principles from Nest.”We want to make sure that we as Google are transparent to everyone,” Chandra said. “When it’s going to Google, when it’s being recorded, that we are transparent to any user that comes into your house, whether it be the babysitter, the nanny, your guests, your family members, what have you.”Chandra noted that these steps are necessary as we move away from tech that’s strictly personal, such as a smartphone, toward tech that needs to be both communal and personal. He called the Google Nest Hub Max a representation of how the company wants to approach this dichotomy while keeping privacy intact. Anyone can interact with the Hub Max, but the Face Match feature allows it to also offer personalized notifications and information. Chandra called Face Match an example of how Google can “rethink the computing model to do really helpful things, but in a privacy sensitive way.” The Hub Max can show personalized notifications after it recognizes you. Chandra said the Hub Max will store all face models on the device itself and it will perform the processing locally as well so that the information never leaves the Hub Max. Blake Kozak, a senior analyst at smart home and security analysis firm IHS noted that as far as security cams in general, on-device storage provides “an enhanced-level of security compared with cloud-storage. By storing footage locally, consumers can rest assured that the risk of hackers gaining access to the footage is far less than if the footage is stored in the cloud.” Several Google representatives also noted that Face Match is meant solely as a personalization feature and it’s not meant for security. You won’t be able to make purchases on the Hub Max verified only by your face.Cameras and dataThe mute switch on the back of the Nest Hub Max will also function as a hard switch for the camera. It will essentially cut power to the cam so it can’t be used. Even though the switch is functionally the same as a physical shutter, I’m sure an actual physical shutter would give added peace of mind to some shoppers.The mute switch cuts the power to the camera. Angela Lang/CNET “Overall, many manufacturers, especially in Europe, are making security cameras with shutters,” said Kozak. “So when the camera is off or not recording, it is clear for the consumer that their privacy is intact.”In addition to disabling Face Match, you can use the settings in the Google Home app to disable any drop-in viewing of the camera — so you won’t be able to check on the live feed of the cam when you’re out and about.You’ll also find a tab in the Google Assistant app settings called “You.” While the tab can help you see more personalized search results and organize your contacts, it will also house your activity history and privacy settings in one place so you can easily make changes.Competing for privacyGoogle isn’t the only company with a renewed emphasis on privacy. Last week, Facebook touted a new focus on privacy at the company’s F8 developer conference. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said “The future is private” and announced scholarships to help students create secure and private artificial intelligence. Facebook has been mired in privacy scandals recently, including the Cambridge Analytica scandal and mishandling customer data.Amazon, Google’s main competitor in the smart home space, came under fire recently when it was revealed that Amazon workers listened to your conversations with the company’s digital assistant and had access to private data. Google faced backlash recently as well after it was revealed that the hub of the Nest Secure system — the Nest Guard — had a built-in hidden microphone.With the Hub Max’s new facial recognition abilities, Google is stepping into an area of tech with lots of privacy implications. Storing all Face Match data locally is a nice touch, but you can still use the cam as a security device and with Nest’s premium Nest Aware subscription, it can use facial recognition to customize alerts based on who it sees.If having an extra camera in your home will make you worried, Google will continue to offer the cameraless Google Nest Hub. As far as the Hub Max, Google is saying the right things at the very least. I also appreciate the new “You” tab and hope it legitimately makes it easier to manage your privacy and usage settings. That said, only time will tell if the company’s promises of privacy will hold up to its growing roster of increasingly personalized smart home gadgets. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) paid for free haircuts from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Aug. 13 at the popular Davis Barber and Beauty Services on Livingston Road, S.E. in Ward 8. This is Mendelson’s third year of paying for haircuts.“Getting a fresh haircut is a positive message to kids about going to school,” the chairman told the AFRO. “This will help low-income families with preparing their children for school.”Derek Davis provided free haircuts for kids at his barber shop in Washington, D.C. (Courtesy photo)Free haircuts have become commonplace among “Back-to-School” activities in the District of Columbia. Barbers donate their services and generally give free basic haircuts at school sites and in their shops.Davis Barber is a product of the Willie Davis family, which started the shop in 1968. The late Willie Davis was known to run a professional establishment focused on serving the needs of the customer in a clean environment.Willie Davis was a respected barber on the national level and in 2009 he was elected to the National Association of Barber Board of America Hall of Fame.His son, Derek, a retired District of Columbia Public School educator, manages the shop, with his sibling Marsten and is a prominent African-American barber. Derek Davis was elected president of the National Association of Barber Boards of America in 2013 and has served as the chairman of the District of Columbia’s Barber and Cosmetology Board.Marsten teaches barbering at Ballou Stay High School, an alternative institution for people who have dropped out for various reasons. He also works in the shop during opening hours.Some of the barbers in the shop have been with Davis for decades.Derek Davis told the AFRO that his family believes in giving back to the community. “We want to give something back and Ward 8 has been good to us,” Davis said. “We can afford to give free haircuts to young people so they can look nice for school.”Davis admitted that the free haircuts also serve as a vehicle to getting new customers.Among the patrons that Davis Barber has had over the years is a former mayor of the District.“Marion Barry used to come here to get his hair cut,” Davis said of the late political icon. “He was a good customer and some members of my family would socialize with him at The Players’ Lounge.Twenty families had their sons’ hair worked on while book bags and other school supplies were handed out. Monica McLamore lives in the immediate area of Davis Barber and regularly participates in the free hair cut event. “I bring my boys to this every year and this is the third year for us,” McLamore told the AFRO. “This prepares them for school and it helps economically.”Helping people is precisely why Mendelson does this. “This barbershop is part of the neighborhood and anything I can do to help the community I will certainly try to do,” he said.
Bernard Arnault, France’s richest man, is one of a group of shareholders set to invest €5 million in new French digital-terrestrial TV channel Numéro 23, according to a report in Le Point.LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton boss Arnault will invest in the channel, formerly known as TVous la Diversité, alongside Casino group, Iliad Telecom boss Xavier Niel, Jacques-Antoine Granjon and Jacques Veyrat, according to the report. Channel boss Pascal Houzelot will retain a majority stake in the venture.Numéro 23 was one of six new channels to be granted a licence by regulator the CSA, with a mission to represent the diversity of French society.Arnault was most recently in the news following his move to gain Belgian citizenship, leading to accusations that he wanted to use this to gain exemption from French taxes as a Belgian domiciled in Monaco. Arnault said he intended to continue paying taxes in France and that his reasons for seeking Belgian citizenship were purely personal. It was announced at the end of last week that Arnault is to receive an honorary knighthood in the UK for services to business and the wider community.
Google Home, the small smart home device that Google plans to launch later this year, will be based on the same technology as its existing Chromecast HDMI dongle, according to US online news service The Information.According to The Information, citing an unnamed source, Google Home will be based on the same ARM processor and WiFi chip as Chormecast.Google Home will add a microphone and speaker to existing Chromecast technology, enabling users to give voice commands to the device to play music or manage a number of other in-home devices.The device will be able to ‘talk’ to Chromecast, enabling voice-commanded playing of videos on the TV.Google Home is being led by Mario Querioz, the Google executive behind Chromecast.
