Apple The benefits of dark mode Apple introduced dark mode for Mac in 2018. At the time, creative professionals raved about the feature, as it’s sleek and makes photos and text pop on the black background. But aside from creative potential, the obvious benefit is that dark mode helps protects your eyes from the traditionally blinding whiteness of computer and phone screens. Even with features like Night Shift, which softens harsh blue light and wearing blue-light blocking glasses, bright white tech screens can still cause blurry vision, headaches and watery eyes. For many, dark mode may alleviate those symptoms. Reducing the amount of blue light you come into contact with throughout the day may also help you sleep better. Additionally, dark mode for iOS might increase your iPhone’s battery life. It takes less power for OLED screens to emit dark colors than a bright ones, so while Apple hasn’t yet made any claims that Dark Mode saves battery, there’s a good chance that it will give you more time before you need to plug in again. However, this is only true for OLED screens (organic light-emitting diode) and not LCD (liquid crystal display) screens. In OLED screens, every individual pixel lights up to create an image. So when you turn on Dark Mode, your phone just shuts off the pixels it doesn’t need — versus an LCD screen, which uses a backlight regardless of color scheme. Only the newest iPhones use OLED, so this trick won’t work for you if you use any model from the 8 Plus or earlier. More iPhones with OLED screens are expected to come out next year. Until this year, Dark Mode was only available with MacOS on Mac computers. The new feature is currently in Apple’s beta iOS and should be available with iOS 13, which will come out with the newest iPhone in September. What is dark mode? Like its name implies, dark mode darkens the user interface on Apple devices. Basically, the appearance is inverted so that instead of black text on a white background, you see light or white text on a black background. The feature is system-wide, so all native Apple apps will support dark mode, and so will your notifications and widgets. Plus, Dark Mode will be available for third-party developers to make it part of their app. The effect is most noticeable on apps where the majority appears white, such as Apple Health and Calendar. The market capitalisation of companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) fell to a 10-month low in the concluding week, as overseas investors offloaded shares in the domestic stock market amid growing worries on the Indian economy.The BSE market capitalisation fell to Rs 93.83 trillion on Friday, reaching a level not seen since October 2014. The benchmark BSE Sensex plunged 562 points or 2.2% on the last trading day of the week to close at 25,201 points, posting a 13-month low. Overall, the Sensex lost more than 1,000 points in the week.Banking, auto, real estate, oil and metal stocks saw a massive erosion in their market capitalisation due to a high volatility in the markets.Market capitalisation of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) fell by over 15,300 crore during the week despite the company’s overseas arm buying a 15% stake in Vankorneft, a subsidiary of Russia’s oil giant Rosneft.ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL) has reportedly paid $1.25 billion (Rs 8,250 crore) for a stake in Vankorneft, a source familiar with the development told Reuters.Profit booking led to a sell-off in the IT stocks, resulting in a decline in their market capitalisation. IT stocks have shown some strength in the past few weeks due to a deprecating rupee.Weak gross domestic product (GDP) in the first quarter, concerns on China slowdown, rising crude oil prices and rising expectations over the interest rate hike by the US central bank were the major negatives that hit the markets during the week.

There is a geographic bias in Arctic BC studies toward the Atlantic sector, with lack of observational constraints for the extensive Russian Siberian Arctic, spanning nearly half of the circum-Arctic. Here, 2 y of observations at Tiksi (East Siberian Arctic) establish a strong seasonality in both BC concentrations (8 ng⋅m−3 to 302 ng⋅m−3) and dual-isotope–constrained sources (19 to 73% contribution from biomass burning). Comparisons between observations and a dispersion model, coupled to an anthropogenic emissions inventory and a fire emissions inventory, give mixed results. In the European Arctic, this model has proven to simulate BC concentrations and source contributions well. However, the model is less successful in reproducing BC concentrations and sources for the Russian Arctic. Using a Bayesian approach, we show that, in contrast to earlier studies, contributions from gas flaring (6%), power plants (9%), and open fires (12%) are relatively small, with the major sources instead being domestic (35%) and transport (38%). The observation-based evaluation of reported emissions identifies errors in spatial allocation of BC sources in the inventory and highlights the importance of improving emission distribution and source attribution, to develop reliable mitigation strategies for efficient reduction of BC impact on the Russian Arctic, one of the fastest-warming regions on Earth. © 2017 Phys.org Journal information: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Black carbon consists of carbon particles that are small enough to become airborne. One such example is soot sent into the air from burning coal. It is not a greenhouse gas, but does contribute to global warming via another means. It lands on top of snow, and because it is black, absorbs heat from the sun, which causes two problems—one is that some of that in the northern latitudes, which would normally be reflected back into the atmosphere, remains on the ground. The other is that it contributes to higher than normal snow melt. In this new effort, the research team ventured into a remote part of Siberia to gather statistics on black carbon levels, because it is one of the few northern places left on Earth where data regarding its presence is not regularly collected.The team set up a research station just outside of the town of Tiksi and immediately began monitoring the amount of black carbon that landed on its sensors. They report that they found more than was expected and that it was coming from an unexpected source. The biggest source, they found, was automobile exhaust, which was surprising because there is very little automobile traffic in Siberia. They suggest it likely traveled from more populous places in Europe, Russia and China. Before arriving at the site, the researchers had suspected that the biggest source would be gas flares caused by the oil industry, which are common in Siberia.The researchers were able to identify the source of the black carbon by looking at its isotopic fingerprint—different sources produce different isotopes. Regular black soot, for example, has very little carbon 14. Such testing revealed that coal burning was the second largest source of black carbon in the region, though they noted things changed by season—during the summer, burning biomass was the biggest source.The researchers suggest that it is important that all sources of climate change be accounted for if accurate predictions and models are to be made—a critical factor for figuring out how to reverse what is occurring. Thanima ’18, the annual cultural event to mark Onam festival was recently held at Vellore Institute of Technology. The festival was inaugurated by Malayalam actor Amit Chakkalakkal while Dr G Viswanathan, Founder, and Chancellor of VIT, handed over prizes to those who had extended help in all forms to the Kerala flood victims.Thanima is held at VIT and organised by students and faculty hailing from Kerala. The recent Kerala floods had caused immense destruction to the State and people from all over the world had contributed for relief and rehabilitation. Students, parents, staff and the management had mobilised a relief amount Rs 1 crore, which was personally handed over to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan by Dr Viswanathan. In addition, with help from philanthropists in Vellore, students mobilised Rs 20 lakh worth of clothes, medicines, and stationery and this was sent in a truck to Kerala. This year’s Thanima was held as an event to express gratitude to the people who had contributed to the flood relief. March 16, 2009 As if it isn’t hard enough keeping track of all the next-gen Wi-Fi terms (802.11n, draft-n, and so on), you then have to figure out what the heck they mean. In the Wi-Fi space, draft-n is the new, faster, stronger, more reliable form of Wi-Fi. More than 25 percent of the Wi-Fi devices shipped in 2008 supported draft-n, says Edgar Figueroa, executive director of the Wi-Fi Alliance. He points to ABI research that estimates by 2012, 90 percent of all devices will support it.Fortunately, old and new versions can work and play in harmony. So while “there probably won’t be a time when it’ll be absolutely necessary to upgrade,” says Figueroa, “the market is naturally moving toward the best technology.” And next-gen is where it’s at.Draft-n gear can provide significant improvements to your network, including five times the throughput (up to 250 Mbps) and twice the range (up to 200 meters). And that doesn’t even include the quieter drip-drip of Fortune 500 trade secrets falling into the hands of Chinese cyber-spies.With cyber-attacks weighing heavily on the mind of business leaders, I asked three leading corporate combatants who work on the front lines to offer advice to executives at this year’s Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit in Laguna Niguel.Here are three rules you need to know, offered up by General Electric chief information officer Jamie Miller, Lockheed Martin executive vice president Sondra Barbour and FedEx FDX chief information security officer Denise Wood:Worry about your suppliers.With Fortune 500 companies heavily fortified, hackers are looking for new entry points. That means suppliers who have access to your data. Small companies are easy entry points because they don’t have the resources to keep up with sophisticated security demands. Yet they sometimes have access to their big partners’ important information, including everything from engineering plans to emails and passwords.While some suppliers are obvious targets, “it could be someone you have far down the supply stream—like Fazio Brothers’ air conditioning repair,” warns FedEx’s Wood.To combat the problem, GE has installed a single point of entry for suppliers to better monitor who comes in and out. “We’re very mindful of our perimeter,” says Miller. Lockheed’s Barbour encourages executives from corporate headquarters to “go out there and see which suppliers have [access to] the most critical data. We help shore them up.”Protect your “crown jewels.”Your company is probably going to get hacked. The velocity and complexity of hacking attempts has skyrocketed, with companies routinely facing millions of knocks on the vault door. “Invest in your security operations,” says Miller. “But then you need to take a step back and decide what’s the most important information you need to protect—and how are you going to protect that– assuming someone is already inside? What are your crown jewels—whether it’s intellectual property or financial assets or personal data?”Drop the competitive guard and schmooze.The guardians of your company’s cyber security should be encouraged to network within the industry to swap information on the latest hacker tricks and most effective defenses. “There’s a huge black market” of hackers, notes FedEx’s Wood. “The bad guys collaborate so well” – so should their victims.
