From the Other Side: Talking South Alabama with Adam Luckett

first_imgThis week, Oklahoma State will face a first time opponent, the South Alabama Jaguars, on the road in Mobile, Alabama. It’s a program that I, like many of you likely, don’t know a lot about. That’s why we reached out to Adam Luckett of the SBNation site Underdog Dynasty. He’s been covering the Sun Belt for the site for a little while now. Adam was kind enough to answer some questions and provide some solid insight into the Jaguars. That includes why he considers the Jags to be inconsistently consistent, who the best players on offense and defense are, and why you shouldn’t expect much of a crowd Friday night. I’ve included the full audio interview and hit some of the highlights below.Phillip Slavin: South Alabama is a first-time opponent for OSU this year. Last year, the Jaguars knocked off Mississippi State. So what’s different from last year to this year for South Alabama?Adam Luckett: South Alabama is a program that’s in their sixth year in the FBS so they’re fairly new, pretty young team. Actually since they joined the FBS they’ve yet to post a winning season even though they’ve been to two bowl games, in 2014 and in 2016. It’s really been a volatile program under Joey Jones. Inconsistently consistent really is what they are. You don’t know from Saturday to Saturday what you’re going to get from the Jags.Last year’s the perfect example. They opened up going to Starksville as a 28-point dog and pulled off a win over Mississippi State. Then the week after that they lose at home to a Georgia Southern team that goes 5-7. Really, kind of get smacked. Then a few weeks later they host an FCS Nicholls team, and they have to go to overtime to beat them. Then the following week they beat San Diego State, a team that finished in the 25, by 18 at home.Year in and year out coaches say that they have the most talented roster in the Sun Belt. They bring in a lot of junior college players each year and they’ve got talent at the skill positions. They’ve got a running back named Xavier Johnson that’s going to end up leaving as the program’s all-time leading rusher. Then you’ve got a front seven on defense that’s really, really got some nice players, including some FBS transfers at their defensive end position. They’re a team that because of their talent can give bigger teams some real problems, but have a problem staying consistent.PS: On the offensive side of the ball, who is the one player OSU fans should know about going into the game?AL: Outside of Xavier Johnson, who’s the program’s leading rusher, I would say Jamarius Way, a junior college transfer.[USATSI]He just played in his first game at the FBS level. He recorded two catches for 42 yards. The long one was for 30 and that was for a touchdown. He was a guy that the coaching staff gushed over all of fall camp. Really big receiver, 6-foot-4, 215-pounds. So he’s a guy that they really like and think will emerge as their go-to receiver. In a game like this ,Oklahoma State is going to put some points up on the board, so South Alabama is going to have to air it out. That’s the guy I think they’ll (OSU) need to keep an eye on and keep bottled up so they can really cruise to a comfortable victory.PS: A team’s offense is reliant on its quarterback. Tell me a little bit about South Alabama’s quarterback Cole Garvin.[USATSI]AL: Garvin played decently well in his first game. However, at the receiving position they lost a lot off last season. That’s the reason the staff is so dependent on Jamarius Way. They lost their top five receivers from last season. You saw it in the last game; Garvin completed 19 passes but they were to 10 different receivers. They’re kind of fishing for answers there. He’s not going to blow you up, but he’s manageable and he’s serviceable. He usually doesn’t turn the ball over, so he’s not going to put you in bad spots, he’s going to put the team in good position all night. But, I don’t think he’s a quarterback that you can say ‘hey go out and win us this game.’ He’s more of a game manager-type as of right now.PS: OSU is going to put up points. On the defensive side what is going to be South Alabama’s game plan to slow OSU down and which player might have the most success against the Cowboys?AL: The strength of the South Alabama defense is in their front seven. Middle Linebacker Darrell Songy returns for his senior year. He was a former player at Oregon State before going to junior college. Had 100 tackles and 7.5 tackles for a loss last season. So he’s really strong. They believe they’re about eight to ten deep on the defensive line. They’ve got two power-5 transfers in Finesse Middleton (DE) who transferred from Louisville. Then Rocel McWilliams (DE) who transferred from Missouri. But the best player on the defense will be safety Jeremy Reaves.[USATSI]He was an all-conference performer last year. Against Ole Miss he recorded a sack, two tackles-for-a-loss, and a pass break-up. He’s the guy that makes a lot of defense for the defense, but the strength is up front.PS: The game is on the road on a Friday night in Mobile, Alabama. What can we expect from the crowd?[USATSI]AL: I wouldn’t expect a very big crowd. Usually they don’t really pack it in. They’re at Ladd-Peeble Stadium. It’s a decent size stadium, roughly 33,000. But the South Alabama fan base … unless Troy is coming in, their in-state rival, it doesn’t usually get packed. The reason the Troy game get’s packed is all the Troy fans come down.Just for example, last year for the San Diego Stage game they only had 14,000 at the game. Now, for the Oklahoma State game there’s going to be more than usual, but it’s not a crazy home field advantage for the Jags there. So it should be one of the more comfortable atmospheres the Pokes play in this fall on the road. This is a young program. They’re trying to build up and start something. They’re the fifth school in Alabama. You’ve got Alabama, Auburn, Troy, and UAB, who’ve been playing football a lot longer. Troy of course has a great winning tradition. So they’re really trying to climb the ladder and build up fan support. Now you will get more random fans going to this game because of Oklahoma State, because they want to see Mason Rudolph and James Washington. But, with it being on a Friday night, and with high school football going on, I wouldn’t expect a huge crowd there. If you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber. Avengers Endgame new trailer arrives full of MCU flashbacks

first_imgRocket Raccoon and War Machine better be awesome together in Avengers: Endgame. Marvel Studios The new trailer for Avengers: Endgame, which Marvel Studios released Thursday, offers a few more hints of our next trip to the Marvel Cinematic Universe on April 26.Thanos may have snapped half the population to dust in Avengers: Infinity War, but that doesn’t mean the fight is over. The trailer opens with a stranded-in-space Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) recording a message for his Earth-bound fiancee Pepper Potts, reminiscing about his first days as Iron Man and falling in love with her. (Still no sign of Pepper in the current timeline, however.) After the title card, the trailer ends with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) meeting Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), who isn’t fazed by his hammer tricks, as she smirks at the god.”I like this one,” he says, suggesting that the MCU powerhouses will get along just fine. TV and Movies Culture 4 Update: After an uproar over the lack of Danai Gurira’s (Okoye) name in the top billing, Marvel Studios released a new official poster.  It kicks off a series of mostly black-and-white flashbacks to the various Avengers’ past adventures — like Steve Rogers’ pre-Captain America World War 2 life and the now destroyed Asgard — and the Snappening by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Fascinatingly, the only color we see in these parts is red (like the beginning of the first Endgame trailer).Hawkeye/Ronin and Black Widow sport a variety of haircuts in the color shots, hinting at either a fashion crisis or that we’ll be hopping to different points in the timeline. Hawkeye’s flashbacks include a look at him teaching his daughter how to shoot an arrow (presumably before she’s dusted and he goes dark?). Some publications have speculated this could instead be Kate Bishop, Hawkeye’s protege, as Marvel possibly introduces Young Avengers — but if you look closely in trailer at 0:38, there are other Barton family members in the background. Is it impossible to think Marvel would rewrite comic canon for a film? Absolutely not, but signs point to this being where Clint was pre-Snappening. (Quick, someone comb through all the released Endgame footage and let us know how wrong we are!)”The world has changed, and none of us can go back. All we can do is our best, and sometimes, the best that we can do, is to start over,” says the late Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) — a line she uttered in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Appropriately enough, we get a shot of Cap carrying her coffin. Marvel Studios We then see Cap, Nebula, Ant-Man, Hawkeye, War Machine, Iron Man (who clearly makes it home) and Black Widow in fancy, matching white Avengers outfits. Could they be preparing for a trip to space … or perhaps these are the rumored fancy suits for a trip to the Quantum Realm? 26 Photos Avengers: Endgame trailer takes you back to the start She should have been up there all this time. Winter sun sales are ahead 9 and half the capacity is booked

first_imgWith files from The Canadian Press Share << Previous PostNext Post >> Friday, December 15, 2017 Winter sun sales are ahead 9% and half the capacity is booked: Transat Posted by Tags: Air Transat, Transat MONTREAL — Revenues were up 14% for Transat A.T. Inc. in the fourth quarter of 2017, following an “excellent” summer season that President and CEO Jean-Marc Eustache says was one of the best in the company’s history.Transat A.T. plans to spend $750 million over the coming years to develop its hotel chain in Mexico and the Caribbean.Vertical integration is crucial, said Odette Trottier, Transat’s Director, Communications and Corporate Affairs, in an interview with Travelweek earlier this fall: “It becomes more and more important for leisure travel companies to control the actual products – the flight, transfers and excursions, and, of course, hotels.”In a conference call on Thursday Transat co-founder and CEO Jean-Marc Eustache said he plans to devote the next 18 to 24 months until he retires to begin developing the chain of hotels while his heir, Annick Guerard, runs the company as COO.“It’s our main goal for the development of Transat,” said Eustache.A president for the hotel division will be hired within weeks to put the plan in action before he “disappears” after retiring and leaving his position as chairman, he added.Transat plans to purchase and refurbish one hotel and a piece of land this year as it looks to build a network of 5,000 rooms, 60% of which it will own and manage, over the next five to seven years. In October Transat sold its 35% stake in its Ocean Hotels joint venture for $186 million. The company also signed a deal last month to sell its Jonview Canada subsidiary to a Japanese company for $44 million.Transat has also simplified its fleet to give it more flexibility, improved its digital footprint, augmented the amount of trips it sells directly and improved revenue management. “I think we are better armed to face any of those actions coming from our competitors in the future,” said CFO Denis Petrin.Transat beat expectations as the travel company’s fourth-quarter net income surged due to a strong transatlantic summer season and the sale of its stake in Oceans Hotels. For the quarter ended Oct. 31, 2017, the company posted revenues of $698.6 million, compared with $612.1 million for the same period in 2016, an increase of 86.4 million. This increase resulted mainly from an 8.7% increase in total travellers in the transatlantic market, while average selling prices were up 4%. In this market, Transat A.T. increased capacity by 8.5% compared with 2016, while overall capacity was up nearly 5%.More news:  Direct Travel names Smith as Senior VP, Leisure Marketing, North America“The fourth quarter, like the summer as a whole, was excellent. Financially, our summer results were among the best in our history and significantly improved our results for the year compared with last year,” said Eustache. “From a strategic standpoint, we made great strides towards establishing our hotel division and in several other major areas, including fleet composition and corporate leadership succession.”In the sun destination market, the corporation’s capacity was down 3.8% compared with 2016 due to hurricanes Irma and Maria, which resulted in the repatriation of passengers, particularly in Cuba and the D.R. and the cancellation of certain flights. As a result, total passengers were down 2.7% in that market, while average selling prices rose 7.2%.Transat A.T.’s operations generated $78.5 million in adjusted operating income compared with $46.5 million in 2016. This uptick was driven primarily by higher average selling prices across its markets, as well as by higher capacity and load factors in the transatlantic market. On Oct. 4, 2017, the corporation completed the sale of its 35% minority interest in Ocean Hotels to H10 Hotels, ahead of the anticipated Nov. 2, 2017 closing date. As announced earlier this July, the sale closed for $187.5 million, received in cash on Oct. 4.For the whole year, Transat A.T. posted revenues of $3.0 billion compared with $2.9 billion in 2016 and adjusted operating income of $102 million, compared with $25.8 million in 2016. During the summer, the corporation increased its product offering in the transatlantic market by 7.9%, and average selling prices were higher across its markets. All markets combined, total travellers were up 8.2% for the year.More news:  Le Boat has EBBs along with its new 2020 brochureFor the winter season, it posted an operating loss of $65.7 million (4.2%) compared with $54.2 million (3.4%) in 2016. This decline was due to a rise in air costs and the unfavourable foreign exchange effect which, combined with an increase in fuel prices, resulted in a $39.3 million increase in operating expenses for the winter. This could not be offset by higher average selling prices for sun destination packages, noted the company.During the summer, operating income amounted to $100.5 million (7.0%), compared with $23.9 million (1.9%) for the previous year, driven primarily by higher average selling prices, capacity and load factors across markets. This year, and particularly in the last six months, a number of initiatives were carried out to lay the foundations for the 2018-2022 plan. These include the announcement of the leases for 10 Airbus A321neo LRs, to be operational from the beginning of 2019, the extension of existing A330 leases under better financial conditions, the addition of new A330s, and an agreement with Thomas Cook that will see it provide the corporation with A321ceos in the winter, replacing the Boeing 737s currently operated by Transat.Looking ahead to the first half of fiscal 2018, Transat A.T. reports that capacity is up 8% in the sun destination market outbound from Canada. To date, 50% of that capacity has been sold, bookings are ahead by 9.2%, and load factors are similar. Due to the strengthening of the Canadian dollar, offset by rising fuel costs, operating expenses are currently down 2.1%, while margins are currently up 2% from the same date last year.As for the transatlantic market, where it is low season, Transat’s capacity is up 20% from last winter. To date, 47% of that capacity has been sold, bookings are ahead by 15% and load factors are down 2%.If these trends continue, Transat said it expects to achieve better results than in the 2017 winter season.
