By Dialogo January 01, 2010 Route of the Marimba revives Afro- Colombia n folk music The sound of bass drums, rainsticks, marimbas — an instrument similar to the xylophone — and long conical bongos known as “cununos” can be heard once more in Colombia, thanks to a Ministry of Culture plan to restore the musical heritage of Latin America’s second-biggest population of African descent after Brazil. The Route of the Marimba program seeks to revive the folk music of the descendants of African slaves on Colombia’s Pacific coastline, an area under constant threat from the Andean nation’s decadeslong internal conflict. The program was launched along the southern part of the coast, a region that includes the provinces of Nariño, Cauca and Valle del Cauca. The designer of the plan is Culture Minister Paola Marcela Moreno, herself an Afro-Colombian, who has taken up the challenge of promoting the culture of this people and bringing them out of isolation. In almost two years, the Route of the Marimba has led to the creation of traditional music schools in 14 municipalities. It has also assisted musicians in marketing their music for global consumption and in construction of the folk instruments to maintain the tradition.
Andre Villas-Boas has been assured by Tottenham that Gareth Bale will remain at White Hart Lane next year if the club qualify for the Champions League. Press Association He added: “The club is committed to keeping the best assets. That’s the only way that we can ensure that we are in the top four every year. Gareth is part of that project bearing in mind that he has been amazing this season. Hopefully we can develop him to a greater extent.” Whether Tottenham do make the top four is still largely in the balance. They will move up from fifth to third if they beat Wigan on Saturday, but their traditionally poor showing towards the end of the season, coupled with the fact that they still have to play Chelsea away, means there is still a good chance that the club will have to settle for fifth. What is certain is that there is no bigger fan of Bale within the Tottenham set-up than Villas-Boas. The Portuguese, so careful not to single his players out for individual praise at Chelsea, never passes on an opportunity to hail Bale. The loving embrace the two shared after Bale’s superb last-minute winner against West Ham earlier this season also gives hope to supporters that the manager’s bond with the player could be key to boosting the chances of him remaining at the club. “We get a buzz from working with great players and Gareth has developed into a great player so I couldn’t be happier,” the 35-year-old said. “Gareth has had a major development this year. He has played in so many positions and has had such a big impact in those positions. We are happy that he has been nominated but we would be even happier if he was to win.” Bale’s trophy cabinet looks to swell in the coming weeks after another season of success for the 23-year-old. The Welshman is odds-on favourite to land the PFA Player of the Year award, and there is a chance that he could also scoop the gong awarded to the best young player of the season. Bale’s 28 goals for club and country have seen him linked to some of Europe’s biggest clubs, most notably Real Madrid, who have watched the Welshman on several occasions. But asked whether Bale would stay if his team qualify for the Champions League, the Tottenham manager said: “I think so, that’s the information that I have from the club.”
