By Richard MartinMADRID,(Reuters)-Lionel Messi came to Barcelona’s rescue for the second time in a week by snatching a late winner to give his side a barely deserved 2-1 win at Atletico Madrid on Sunday which provisionally took the champions top of La Liga.Rafinha had put Luis Enrique’s side ahead against the run of play in the 63rd minute but Godin nodded in Koke’s free kick to level in the 70th and bring back memories of his title-clinching goal for Atletico at the Nou Camp in May 2014.For much of the game, Barca looked to be suffering a lack of confidence from their 4-0 thrashing at Paris St Germain in the Champions League. They made a timid start and had goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen to thank for impressive saves in either half.Just as he had done the week before at Leganes, however, Messi grabbed all the points for his side, producing an instinctive near-post finish in the 87th minute following a free kick.Barca lead the standings on 54 points, two ahead of Real Madrid and Sevilla although Zinedine Zidane’s side can recover top spot with a game in hand if they beat Villarreal later on Sunday.Boosted by their 4-2 win at Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, Atletico made a dominant start, surrounding Barca’s area and pouncing on any mistake.A misplaced pass out from Ter Stegen was quickly intercepted and led to Antoine Griezmann getting an early shot in but Barca defender Samuel Umtiti got his body in the way.Ter Stegen denied Griezmann on several occasions, leaping to the top corner to tip a thumping first-half shot over the bar and then thwarting the France striker with his knee after the break.Down the other end, Atletico’s Jan Oblak turned away a curling Messi free kick to announce his return after 10 weeks out injured, while Luis Suarez had a goal ruled out for a foul in a goalmouth scramble. It took a scrappy strike from Rafinha to break the deadlock, the Brazilian firing into the far corner when the ball bounced fortuitously towards him, while Messi also benefited from a lucky ricochet to settle the game late on.“I think we played a perfect game but they had two rebounds and they took advantage of them and leave here with the three points,” said Atletico captain Gabi.Barca coach Luis Enrique added: “It was a very hard-fought victory, we struggled in the first half because of their pressure and the conditions of the pitch but we scored at the end and that will give the players a huge morale boost.”
This weekend, a guy jumped over a mascot and dunked a basketball. No big deal. Sure, it wasn’t Taylor Swift dissing Kanye at the Grammys or a political statement by Kendrick, but man, was it entertaining. The dunk contest at the NBA All-Star Weekend can be a thing of beauty, and this year it was. It was a phenomenal display of athletic talent by two young men no older than myself. Aaron Gordon and Zach LaVine dueled Saturday night and showed the world why nothing beats the NBA’s All-Star Festivities.Who doesn’t want to watch athletes show off their superior athletic talent and do tricks in the air that leave you wondering how it was even possible. The slam dunk is not only one of the most entertaining plays in basketball, but also all of sports. It doesn’t carry the same weight as a Grand Slam or a Hail Mary, but those are special; the dunk is normal. It happens in every basketball game we watch, and yet it got the most special treatment when two spectacular athletes battled each other, topping each other again and again to earn the crown of Slam Dunk Contest champion. The SDC shows the most basic beauty and love for the game, something easily translated across languages and cultures to fans of all ages around the world.Aaron Gordon showed us his stuff when he leaped over Stuff the Magic Dragon, the Magic’s aptly named mascot, doing something seemingly even more impossible each time. He jumped high enough in one dunk to have earned a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics. On the other hand, champion Zach LaVine displayed the power and agile movements of a cat, soaring through the air with grace, speed and force only to slam the ball down at the last moment after executing a series of turns and spins that would make a gymnast do a double take. The roots of the love for the game of basketball were exposed in this contest. There was competition, finesse, grace, power and execution, but most of all there was fun. All of the dunk contest participants and other NBA players sitting courtside looked like they had the joy of young kids playing ball in the park. The show being put on was unlike any NBA game where millions of dollars and playoff berths are on the line; this was purely for the love of the dunk.Nothing is more electrifying to an arena of anxious fans than a dunk. Nothing puts an exclamation point on the game quite like a dunk can do in the final seconds and nothing quite impresses like a dunk if for no other reason than everyone is aware of how physically incapable they are of emulating it. This translates well to our own basketball team that is one of the most electrifying teams in the conference, if not the country. The rate and skill with which the Trojans dunk the basketball is an absolute joy to watch. The team has a total of 86 dunks through the first 23 games of the season, more than doubling their opponents’ total of 41. Freshman dunking phenom Chimezie Metu has 36 dunks. Junior Julian Jacobs is second to Metu with 23 on the year, already surpassing his 19 from last season. This exponential increase in dunking has led to an increase in excitement and is one of many reasons why the Trojans are such a fun team to watch. The glee and fierce competitiveness that comes from a slam dunk is so unique to the game of basketball. Within the select number of athletes who can execute it, there is then another level of athleticism required to make it memorable.During a fast break during USC’s game against ASU, Metu threw the ball off the backboard to himself and finished it with a slam. The creativity or perhaps desperation of this move is something that can stand on his personal highlight reel for years to come.In the same way, LaVine and Gordon have made a name for themselves from the unbelievable performances they gave Saturday night. The dunk is exhilarating, majestic and captivating all in the span of a few moments and that is why the dunk is so special. So for all those who have the capability to dunk, please let this be your go-ahead. We all love it. Thank you for letting us vicariously soar through the clouds for a few moments every time you reach up for that hoop and throw the ball down.Hailey Tucker is a sophomore majoring in broadcast and digital journalism. AdvertorialRevenue in Donegal are targeting PAYE workers with additional income they may not have declared, including taxable social welfare, a leading tax consultant has warned.Noel O’ Donnell, Mabel McHugh & Michael Coll of The Tax Clinic.Due to the economic recession and the lower tax take from the business sector, the Revenue are on a mission to collect every cent they are owed, says Mabel McHugh from The Tax Clinic in Killybegs. Mabel says that there has been a huge increase in the number of PAYE workers who are being questioned by the Revenue about their different sources of income including those who have received taxable social welfare such as Jobseekers Benefit on which tax may be owed. She says if you are in receipt of any other income apart from your income earned as an employee you may have an obligation to declare this on what is called a Form 12.From her experience people are of the understanding that if they receive a P60 at the end of a year they are tax compliant. This is not the case in many circumstances as a P60 is only a document summarising your pay and tax details from a particular employment. It is important to note that it is each person’s own responsibility to review their tax affairs and ensure all taxes that are owed have been paid. Mrs McHugh says that you may have been sent out a Form 12 for the following reasons:• The Revenue may have obtained third party information regarding additional non- paye income such as payments from the Department of Agriculture, Rental Income, Dividend Income, Taxable Social Welfare etc.• You are in receipt of foreign income such as a U.K. State Pension.• You have had a gain subject to Capital Gains Tax during the year, for example property or shares sold. When should I complete and return my Form 12? Typically, you will need to complete your Form 12 by October 31st in the year following the tax year of assessment. i.e. For 2013 taxes, the Form 12 must be submitted by 31st October 2014.Her advice is if you have received a Form 12 do not ignore it. You must complete the form honestly ensuring that you declare your income from all sources. In all circumstances it may be beneficial to seek professional advice.WWW.THETAXCLINIC.IE was founded in February 2010 by Mabel McHugh & Michael Coll. The Tax Clinic is the only business in the Northwest that specialises in offering services to P.A.Y.E workers.
